From Lost in Translation to Flourishing Online: My Language Journey in Starting my Pottery Business

Hey there! I want to share my experience of starting an online business and how a popular tool called ChatGPT came to my rescue. I've always had a passion for pottery, and last July, I decided to turn my hobby into a business. Little did I know that setting up an online store would come with its own challenges, particularly regarding language.

As someone born and raised in Hong Kong, Cantonese is my first language. While I did learn English at a young age and even worked at an American company for many years, it wasn't quite sufficient to navigate the intricacies of starting my own business.

I successfully registered my domain, set up an email, built a website, opened a bank account and receiving my business license, but I encountered difficulties with certain phases along the way. I spent numerous hours conducting online research and watching YouTube tutorials to push forward. The language barrier made things challenging and led to burnout. I quickly realized that my lack of confidence in English posed a significant hurdle, particularly in terms of content creation processes.

That's when I found ChatGPT, a helpful tool for language tasks. I decided to try it out, and I'm glad I did! ChatGPT became my virtual language assistant, helping me with translations, understanding, and communication in English. I was finally able to write product descriptions for my pottery pieces. It assisted me in creating blog posts and even gave me ideas for my social media content. Whenever I had questions or needed something translated, ChatGPT was there to support me.

Of course, like any tool, it has its pros and cons. While it's fantastic for language translation, I sometimes find its writing style a bit too energetic or packed with unnecessary adjectives. That's when I'd switch to other tools like Grammarly to polish my grammar and spelling.

Thanks to the people who are working hard behind these new technology, I overcame the language barrier that once held me back. It gave me the confidence and ability to effectively communicate my ideas, connect with a wider audience, and ultimately kickstart my online business.

So, if you face language hurdles while starting your venture, don’t give up, find the right tools, It can be a game-changer, just like it was for me.
