A Journey Through Hong Kong and Japan: Tales of Enchantment and Surprise

Greetings! I’ve just returned from a fulfilling journey through Hong Kong and Japan, armed with my camera to capture the beauty of the places I visited. Here are some brief highlights that might offer insights for your future travels to Hong Kong and Japan.

Embarking on this journey, a valuable insight emerged:

Booking a Hong Kong hotel in advance might dent your budget. I reserved a room at a delightful 4-star hotel in Jordan, Kowloon, for just US$88 per night, a mere 3 days before my flight. However, the price would go up to US$168 if we wanted to extend our stay. Consequently, we opted for another luxurious 5-star hotel in Mong Kok, booked just a day prior, and discovered it had slashed the regular US$299 rate to a pocket-friendly US$148 per night! Hong Kong adventurers, here’s your hotel-hacking secret! However, Japan presents a different scenario; it’s advisable to secure your hotel room well in advance.

Exploring Hong Kong's culinary scene?

It might give your wallet a workout, with dinners averaging around US$30 and lunches ranging from US$12 to HK$18 per person – a range comparable to the US. Our gastronomic journey zeroed in on relishing delightful Cantonese cuisine, indulging in Dim Sum, and reuniting with friends and family.

Hong Kong: An amazing pottery studio in Pok Fu Lam Farm

I’m thrilled to share that I recently explored an amazing pottery studio in Pok Fu Lam, a hidden gem nestled within Hong Kong’s historic buildings at Pok Fu Lam Farm. Brian, a friend, established this pottery haven for the community, generously providing skills and support free of charge. Stay tuned for an upcoming post where I’ll dive into the fascinating world of clay-covered goodness!

Hong Kong: A Unique Urban Tapestry

Despite being a small city often called the “concrete jungle,” Hong Kong’s historical infrastructure, like sea water toilet flushing system for more economical and sanitary. Underground power grid with avoid clutter city view and provide very stable electricity supply, and the extensive railway system, various public transport options, and vast suburban areas make it diverse and beloved.

More than 150 years under British colonial rule until 1997, Hong Kong’s transformation into an international metropolis, with education, healthcare, and Common Law, created a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences.

Amid challenges since 2019, more than 300,000 have left, seeking new lives and embracing different challenges. For those chose to staying, adapting to the changes is a testament to the city’s resilience. Hong Kong, a city of diversity, change, and resilience, is where everyone will find ways to adapt and create a comfortable life.

A heartfelt shoutout to two taxi drivers who added a touch of warmth to our journeys, a reminiscent nod to the community support of the ’80s and ’90s. A refreshing reminder that not all taxi drivers fit the rude stereotype. Lucky day indeed! 🚖✨

Nagoya and Osaka, Japan: Unveiling Tranquility and Surprises

Our journey took us to Nagoya, Japan, and the ceramic village near by the Owari-Seto Station. This year the Akazu Yaki - Autumn Pottery event  seem to quieter atmosphere hinted at the impacts of the pandemic, with signs of aging and population decline. Seto is a city boasting a long traditional of pottery lasting over 1,000 years, one of the Six Ancient Kilns in Japan. The village awaits your visit, seeking rejuvenation, and stay tuned for an upcoming free e-book where I'll share my experiences living and learning pottery there four years ago.

Osaka, a vibrant hub, welcomed us with delightful surprises. The department stores in Japan are simply extraordinary, catering to all ages from 8 to 80. Umeda SOUQ unveiled a haven for sophisticated ladies at the 10th floor of Hankyu Umeda Main Store. The concept of ‘Aging Gracefully’ took on new dimensions with its blend of fashion and charm.

Attention all handcraft and DIY enthusiasts! Don't miss the expansive Daiso store in Namba, a treasure trove where I discovered a diverse range of DIY project supplies at unbelievably affordable prices.

For photography enthusiasts, Osaka’s allure was further revealed through stunning views, delectable cuisine. Big Camera is a go-to spot for gear shopping. The November scenery in Japan is breathtaking, featuring red and gold maple trees in the park and enchanting Christmas light decorations adorning city streets at night.

Capturing Moments and Serenity

Stepping out at Umeda Station, pedestrians weaved through various shopping malls via elevated walkways. Amidst this, my journey led me to Tully's Coffee at Grand Front Mall. As I savored the delightful flavor reminiscent of home, the enchanting Christmas installations at Grand Front Mall caught my attention, casting a serene atmosphere. What struck me was the Japanese cultural courtesy – a silent agreement not to disturb others. Families quietly captured moments, contributing to a harmonious and heartwarming Christmas ambiance.

Lessons and Souvenirs

Discovering the simple joys of life, from an ancient art of ceramic in Nagoya to a perfectly sized travel bag found during a quest through 7-Eleven convenience stores in Japan. A random ramen restaurant turned into a delightful surprise. While browsing the book 'Minimalist Living' by a popular Japanese blogger, I resonated with the concept of “Find true freedom through discerning practice.”A perfect companion for the days ahead. A heartfelt thank you to the kind old man at 'Buddhist Philosophy Bookshop' (Prince Edward, Kowloon, HK) for guiding my book choices. Thank you!!!

Enjoy the journey, fellow travelers!
