Hello everyone! How's it going? As we approach 2024, I'm curious about your creative plans for the upcoming year. Any special projects or New Year's Eve traditions you're looking forward to?
Before diving into our main topic today, I'm excited to share some key moments from my 2023 journey with you.
In March, I took 20 days to give my kitchen a simple makeover, turning it into a calm, white space. The result is a neat and organized area—keeping things in the cabinets and surfaces clean. It feels satisfying.
In May, launching my online store marked a big move, featuring my handmade pottery and setting the stage for future handcraft projects. Exciting times ahead!
I returned to the pottery studio in September, create new pieces, reconnecting with my pottery pals. November brought a heartwarming reunion with family, friends, and my pottery sensei, Mr. Kato, in Nagoya, Japan. I have also explored a unique pottery studio in Hong Kong. It's been a fulfilling year, setting a positive tone for my creative journey.
Referring to the kitchen project above, establishing a clear goal and scheduling was crucial for repainting. I initiated the process with meticulous planning, addressing tasks like masking, reorganizing cabin and drawer contents, and applying three coats of paint to each door. Strategically, I arranged the drying space into sections throughout my house and reinstalled everything at the project's conclusion. Breaking it down into two parts each day—morning and afternoon—I devoted approximately 5 to 6 hours. Though I initially aimed for a 14-day completion, at the end I extended the timeline to 20 days with a few schedule adjustments.
Begin your day with passion and skill enhancement. Dedicate the first Hour to your vision work—something you're deeply passionate about or consider your niche. For instance, practicing essential watercolor skills, experimenting with different brushes, and crafting a unique style. This sets a positive tone for the day, aligning the passion with continuous improvement.
Part 2: Exploration and Learning after lunch (1 Hour)
I'll slightly chill out, explore cool stuff, and dive into some online research. No napping – gotta resist that lunchtime temptation!
I delve into researching trends, acquiring new skills, and seeking input that fuels my projects. This phase includes studying the works of renowned artisits, exploring home decor ideas, conducting market research, and keeping an eye on current market trends. By doing so, I aim to bridge the gap between inspiration and creation, ensuring my work stays relevant and innovative.
Part 3: Creative Flow ( 2 Hours)
Maintain the momentum of creativity in Part 3 and continue with the creative project, whether it's a current project or experimenting with new ideas.
Sometimes, I practice my writing skills with tools like Grammarly and engage with ChatGPT. This is a part of my creative project, as I would love to record my creative journal and share it with you guys.
Part 4: Administration and Social Media Connection ( 45mins )
The Final Hour is reserved for administrative tasks and reflection. I do it at night before bed and attend to essential but less glamorous aspects of my creative business, such as socializing on social media, replying to emails, and organizing my work and daily life.
Navigating these 5 to 6 hours daily, embrace the ebb and flow of creativity, and find the balance that propels your artistic journey forward. Here are some tips to enhance your productivity and maintain a sustainable creative routine:
Tip #1: Set the Alarm for 55 Minutes
Set a reminder in the last 5 minutes of each Hour. Use this time to jot down notes on seamlessly continuing your work the next day. This ensures a smooth transition between your daily sessions.
Tip #2: Take a Break (15-20 Minutes)
Allocate a well-deserved break between your creative sessions. Use this time to make coffee, prepare a snack, or engage in a relaxing activity. It rejuvenates your mind for the next focused Hour.
Tip #3: Review Tomorrow's Schedule (10-15 Minutes)
Review your schedule for the next day in the last session, concluding your five to six-hour work session. Drop notes if necessary, allowing you to relax and disconnect after intensely focusing on your craft.
Tip #4: Review the Process and Reflection
Regularly review your project and working pattern; make adjustments as needed. Don't forget to find a moment to reflect on your achievements and express gratitude. Sharing your journey with others fosters a sense of community.
Tip #5: Embracing Whitespace
When not in the mood or feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to do nothing and chill with a cup of coffee. Adjust your time based on realistic daily needs or holidays. Remember, whitespace isn't only in a painting or art piece; you can create whitespace in your busy life and deserve to enjoy moments of peace.
I hope these tips resonate with you and can enhance the overall effectiveness of your creative work.
I find this pattern fitting my lifestyle and work in the past month. I was doubtful initially, as it may seem like a small commitment, but the cumulative impact over time is significant. At least I am motivated to get out of bed in the cold, mostly rainy morning in December, LOL.
Yet, I acknowledge that diversity is key, and each person may choose a system that resonates with their unique lifestyle. May the coming year, 2024, be a canvas for everyone to design their own schedules, finding a harmonious balance that not only enhances productivity but also cultivates happiness in daily living. Here's to a year of creative accomplishments, personal growth, and abundant joy. Please share your thoughts and ideas with me in the comment box. I wish you all a Happy New Year!
